Minutes of ASHS Old Timers & Alumni Meeting, February 1, 2014
Meeting was called to order by President Wayne Brooks.
Minutes of previous meeting and treasurer's report were read by Sec/Treasurer, Joan Ragland.
Mike Giles recognized members of the Honored classes....1944, 1954, 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, and 2004. As each class and decade were recognized, pictures were taken and will be shared via website and facebook.
Mr. Moree, current Superintendent of Apple Springs ISD, presented a short overview of the VISION of ASISD and the proposed building expansion project. He invited alumni and members of the district to visit the school and stay informed. Mrs. Janet Bazar, the HS math and art teacher at Apple Springs, gave a report on the resent addition of an elementary library and the remodeling of the high school media center to better meet the needs of students. She also invited anyone interested to tour the elementary library and high school media center. She said donations to the library are always welcome and would be utilized to continue in the remodeling and furnishing of digital equipment and materials for students. Those wishing to donate can make checks payable to Apple Springs ISD and indicate on the check if one has a perference as to donation going to elementary library or to the media center.
Joan Ragland, gave an update on the scholarships being funded by the association. During the summer of 2013, Wilma Jean Barton Rosansky passed away. In her memory, her daughter Janet, made a $5,000 donation to the scholarship fund to establish a new Angelina College Scholarship in memory of Wilma Barton Rosansky. During meetings with the college, the Wilma Barton Rosansky Memorial Scholarship was created and it will be awarded for the first time to a member of the graduating class of 2014. This means that the association will now have TWO totally endowed scholarships at Angelina College and ONE totally endowed scholarship at SFASU in Nacogdoches. A list of all receipients for the Evie Hutson Memorial Scholarship and the Elma & Thomas Lee Martin, Sr. Memorial Scholarship can be found on the association's home page. Efforts to determine why the scholarship at SFASU has only been awarded one time since it was endowed have gone unanswered. Mr. Moree, volunteered to see if he might be able to assist in finding out why the scholarship is not being awarded on a yearly basis.
At next year's homecoming, those in attendance will be asked to vote on the creation and awarding of additional NEW scholarships. The association has several options and several items to take into consideration:
(1) The association can accept donations and maintain funds in association's bank account until a total of $5,000 has been collected and it can endow an additional scholarship at AC. The association would then continue to depositi funds into the scholarship account at AC until the principle reaches $10,000 at which point the scholarship would be fully endowed. Association would have to determine a name for the scholarship. AC would select receipients.
(2) The association could establish it's own scholarship fund with the school district. This means the association would select a committee that would work with the school district's counselor and administration to establish scholarship requirements and application process. The association would set scholarship award amounts and funding would occur through district channels. Association would have to determine a name for the scholarship, create application, select receipients.
(3) Regardless of what path, the association will have to determine name(s) of scholarships, whether administered through AC , school district, or another institution.
(4) $5,000 is the miminum amount needed to establish a scholarship. At most institutions, scholarship principle must be at least $10,000 -$15,000 to be fully endowed.
(5) The ASHS Oldtimer's and Alumni Associations are tax exempt. Anyone making a contribution and wishing to receive a Donation Verification Form should contact Joan Ragland via the association's address : P.O. Box 83, Apple Springs, Tx 75926.
